RELIGION DEPARTMENT Note: An asterisk (*) following the course title indicates the course meets the entrance requirements for UC/CSU when passed with a grade of C or better. FUNDAMENTALS OF CATHOLICISM Prerequisite: None Grade 9 1 Year This course provides first-year students with a foundation in the Catholic Christian Faith, according to the classic catechetical framework, namely that of the Creed, Sacraments, Commandments, and Lord’s Prayer. Specifically, it fulfills the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ semester requirement for Sacraments. HISTORY OF THE BIBLE Prerequisite: None Grade 10 1 Year This two-semester course examines the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures from the historical, cultural, theological and social perspectives; from these perspectives, students will examine the implications that have shaped the contemporary understanding of the Middle East as well as the world community. This course fulfills the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ requirement for the Scriptures. CHURCH HISTORY, FAITH AND REASON Prerequisite: None Grade 11 1 Year This course emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit in forming and shaping the Catholic Christian Church from its inception during the first century AD to the present day. The method is chronological and historical but with various departures to examine more closely events that have profound effects on contemporary Christianity. This course fulfills the requirements for Church History. ETHICS/CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLES Prerequisite: None Grade 12 1 Year This two-semester course focuses on discernment and decision-making using the Ten Commandments and virtues as guidelines. Students will analyze and discuss hypothetical moral dilemmas that will raise their understanding of their own ethical development and the world around them. Subsequently, specific lifestyles will be examined in order to encourage students to reflect upon the several vocations available to them: the single life, marriage, religious life and the priesthood. This course fulfills the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ requirements for Christian Morality, Social Justice and Christian Lifestyles. |
