Mary Star to recognize 1960 storybook football team
This year's homecoming festivities will include a special tribute to the 1960 Mary Star football team. The squad was featured in the book "Thin Ice on the Gridiron" which was written by their famous coach Nick Trani.Below is a list of a few of the activities for the week:
• Between 5:30 and 6, alumni and families are invited to follow the Stars as the varsity football team makes its trek from 8th Street, through the alleys, to Daniels Field. If you can’t make the trek, cheer on the team as the players come through the gates at the field.
• Between 6:30 and 7, Mary Star’s 1960 “Thin Ice on the Gridiron” storybook football team will be introduced during a special 50th anniversary tribute.
• Kickoff for the varsity football game is at 7 and the Homecoming Queen and King will be crowned at halftime.
• A post-game coffee, cake and cookie social will be held at the 8th Street auditorium featuring alumni memorabilia and a 15-minute video segment about the 1960 Mary Star football squad from the “Port Town” documentary.
