In 1995, the San Pedro Area Reuse committee reviewed many applications for the property and recommended in a 24 to I vote (and the LA city council approved) that Mary Star of the Sea High School receive the property to remedy campus overcrowding and improve community conditions overall. In return, Mary Star agreed to have a high school operational on the site in 2002 and to contribute $300,000 to Harbor Interfaith, a provider of aid to the homeless.
The project is now focused on the steps to design, fund and construct new facilities. The initial campus (Phase I for 500 students) will include permanent classroom and administrative buildings with a temporary gymnasium along with practice athletic fields. The budget is estimated at $15,000,000.
Phase II will bring the capacity of the campus to 600 students. It will consist of the multipurpose building and the gymnasium along with canopies, stadium seating and nighttime stadium lighting.
