Breaking Ground for the 21st Century

A Steady Pace for the Project

1991 (Nov.)

Fr. Norbert Wood is approved as the first Norbertine priest to be assigned as chaplain and teacher at Mary Star of the Sea High School.

1994 (June)

Father Norbert is appointed principal.

1994 (Sept.)

School enrollment is 256.

1994 (Nov.)

A school development group is organized to investigate options for gathering resources (assets).

1995 (Mar.)

The development group identifies the availability of US Navy land on Taper Ave as an option.

1995 (May)

Formal application is submitted to the San Pedro Area Reuse Committee (SPARC) for the Taper Ave. site.

1995 (June)

Full time Norbertine staff grows to five at the High School.

1996 (April)

LA City Council formally approves the recommendation of SPARC for Mary Star.

1996 (May)

Formation of a steering committee for the MSHS project begins.

1996 (Sept.)

MSHS submits a detailed application for the site to the US Dept. of Education.

1997 (Jan.)

The Capital Campaign begins for Phase I ($7.5M target for 50,000 sq. ft. of buildings).

1997 (Mar.)

Mary Star is officially notified by the Dept. of Education of the award of land.

1997 (Sept.)

School enrollment is 390.

1997 (Oct.)

BOA Architecture is selected to provide the engineering & pre-architectural planning for MSHS.

1998 (Mar.)

First year of fund raising ends with $4,645,135 in pledges.

1998 (Dec.)

Mary Star requests LA Archdiocese Building Commission (ABC) approval to take title to the land and do demolition and grading.

1999 (Jan.)

Written approval of ABC is granted.

1999 (Jan.)

The deed is recorded.

1999 (Mar.)

Second year of fundraising ends with $5,448,542 in pledges.

1999 (May)

First major foundation grant is received for $800,000 requiring double matching by Dec. 2000.

1999 (Sept.)

Demolition begins on the site. School enrollment is 445. There are six full time Norbertines on staff.

2000 (Jan.)

The Capital Campaign breaks $7,000,000.

2000 (May)

The remodel of existing buildings to become the residence for the Norbertine faculty begins.

2000 (June)

Master site & facility plans with a preliminary budget are available.

2000 (Sept.)

School enrolls 450 students. There are eight full time Norbertines on staff and ten on campus.

2000 (Sept.)

Capital Campaign breaks $8,000,000.

2000 (Oct.)

Application to the City of Los Angeles for an environmental assessment ruling and a conditional use permit (CPU) is submitted.

2001 (April)

Norbertines moved into their new monastery on the new campus site.

2001 (Aug.)

Conditional use permit was unanimously granted by the City of LA review board.

$7 million loan from Archdiocese approved.
Temporary Use Permit received for use of MTG Drive.
Completion Penalty Unanimously Canceled by HUD.

2005 (Aug.)

School building construction begins.

 

2007 (Sept.)

Dedication Ceremony led by Cardinal Roger Mahoney.

Classes begin at the new campus.
