Mary Star of the Sea High School Seal
Mary Star of the Sea Statue During its 100-plus year history, the parish has built and fostered schools. Bishop Mora established the parish in 1889. Beginning in 1914, under the direction of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the first elementary school opened.

In 1951, Monsignor George Scott founded the high school and Sr. Nepomucen, IHM was the school’s first principal.

The school, which was largely staffed by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart, graduated its first class on June 10, 1954. Brothers of the Holy Cross and archdiocesan priests have also helped staff the school at various times in its history.

In 1962, Fermin Lasuen School for boys was established in the area and Mary Star of the Sea High School went from a co-ed school to a girl’s school. However, Fermin Lasuen was closed in 1971 and Mary Star of the Sea High School again became a co-ed school.

The last Immaculate Heart Sister left the school in 1992. Since 1991 the Norbertine Fathers from St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, CA have helped staff the school. There are currently eight Norbertine Fathers on faculty with the balance of the administration and faculty being lay men and women.

The school has played a very important role in the life of the community, graduating nearly 4000 competent and caring students. Many have remained in the San Pedro area.
