The new campus for Mary Star of the Sea High School has begun an important step in site preparation – the demolition of buildings located in strategic areas of the campus. Based on a master plan that details the academic, athletic, and parking areas of the campus, specific buildings have been designated for removal.

Specialized Environmental, Inc. (SEI) of Carson, California was awarded the contract to remove the buildings. SEI is a union demolition and abatement contractor with local, California and national experience. The company is owned and managed by a team with over ten years experience.

Msgr. Patrick Gallagher and Construction WorkerWork commenced on Tuesday, September 7, 1999 and is expect to conclude by January 31, 2000. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles construction department has assigned Mr. Mike Lyssy of Pacific Environmental Co. to assist Mary Star of the Sea Parish with monitoring the demolition. Site grading and engineering will be the next physical milestones after the completion of site clearance.

"This is an exciting step," indicates Msgr. Patrick Gallagher, pastor of Mary Star of the Sea Parish. "We have worked very hard to get to this point. I feel we have made important decisions that allow the project to move forward with confidence in design and commitment."

"I wish to extend my appreciation to the Taper Ave. home owners and to our future neighbors on the adjacent Navy land. They have continued to support our project and encourage us as we have faced challenges and decision points. It is through such community spirit that we maintain our confidence and dedication to this very meaningful project for the Harbor area."

Mary Star of the Sea Parish was officially given title to the 27-acre property formerly used by the US Navy in January 1999. The transfer of the land for educational purposes has been hailed as an affirmation of the marvelous cooperation of the community, citizens, government and church.

To highlight the significance of the undertaking, Mary Star High School's Rector at the time, Rev. Norbert Wood, O.Praem, added, "I can't think of a more positive thing at this point than the clearing of the site. The ability to truly see the central campus space and the surrounding athletic fields will make such a difference to our current and potential donors. Their confidence in this project will now be visibly confirmed!"

Mary Star of the Sea Steering Committee Chairman Albert P. DiRocco, Jr. comments, "The capital campaign volunteers who have done a tremendous job should feel very proud when they see the bulldozers and dump trucks in motion this next month."
