Alumni Games

Alumni baseball and basketball games are organized every year and match up alumni teams against MSHS student teams. If you are interested in playing or watching these games, please contact the school office.

Alumnus In Memoriam

In 2002 we lost a very special alumnus, Bob Espinoza. Bob passed away on 7-20-02. He was a MSHS alumnus, played basketball at Harbor College and Cal State University at Long Beach. He began coaching and teaching at Fermin Lasuen in 1965, and his 1970 basketball team went to the CIF finals. In 2001, Bob was inducted into the CIF Hall Of Fame for helping student athletes in the Southern Section. Bob also created and established the Tournament of Champions. Family, friends and colleagues will sorely miss Bob and a scholarship fund in his name is being established. Anyone interested in contributing to this fund please contact Mrs. Barbara Mancusi at (310) 832-0927.

Rita Dever - Principal, MSHS

  • As both Principal and an alumna of MSSHS, I am most gratified to recognize the extraordinary changes occurring here. I am privileged not only to be part of our school’s history and tradition, but also to be a member of the team working for our educational institution’s growth into the new century. Mary Star is an integral part of our community and, as such, will play a vital role in the success of San Pedro and the region in the future. I am proud to be a part of that role.
Christina Skacan - English, MSHS 1982
  • During the years I attended Mary Star of the Sea High School, students enjoyed outstanding extracurricular activities. I learned terrific life skills by participating in Varsity Girls’ Athletics and the massive, talented Drama Department plays, concerts and variety shows.
  • Mary Star High School has effectively changed for the better by improving, in real, quantifiable terms, its academic regimen. Today’s students receive a far more rigorous college preparatory education and experience a deeper intellectual challenge.
  • The opportunity for the new high school positively impacts our administration, faculty, students and parents by forcing us to plan for the long term, to face serious technological challenges and truly to enter a new millennium of education.
  • I teach at Mary Star of the Sea High school because the minds of humankind are the best asset in the universe and our young people must be prepared and inspired to fulfill their hopes and dreams. Good teachers serve their community; teaching at Mary Star of the Sea allows me to give back to the community in which I was raised.
Anna Marie Andrie -Dance 9, MSHS 1981
  • As I reflect back on the good old days at Mary Star, I must say many things are still the same: friends making new friends, laughter, tears, victories, exams and special memories being made.
  • Today’s students embark on a much more difficult academic program. Counselors play an active role in helping students plan for their future. The spiritual life on campus reflects energy and excitement.
  • It’s rewarding to be part of my alma mater and to bring the traditions of the past into the present. I look forward to being a part of the new high school and being able to continue the STAR pride!
Rick Ibarra Pre-Algebra, Global Science & Varsity Baseball Coach, MSHS 1989
  • I am very proud of the fact that I graduated from Mary Star. I met my wife and most of my best friends at Mary Star. In the last ten years, the enrollment of the school has increased by over 150 students. The faculty and administration has definitely improved in quality and organization. Now with the planning for the new campus, there is increased enthusiasm and anticipation.
  • As a teacher, I hope that I can pass on the Mary Star pride, tradition, and loyalty that was taught to me. I want the students and the faculty to very proud of the Blue and Gold.
Esther Marovich Accounts Receivable, MSHS 1958
  • I was in Kindergarten the year Msgr. George Scott started, so he always called us his babies up until the day we graduated. He was very kind to us.
  • We had a family like atmosphere. We knew everyone in every class. My brother, Carmen, was two years older and my sister, Lucy, was seven years younger so our family attended school here a long time.
  • I think the ladies in black of yesterday were scarier than the men in white of today. We had a respect (fear) for the Sisters, but the Norbertines are much more approachable for the students now.
